This is Kimera born at Nakaseke hospital .He was born with fragile bones at birth. At four months the mother realized he couldn’t support himself as the body was weak from the neck, downward all the bones were too soft to support him independently. At the age of 2 years he weighed 5 kgs which was too low manifesting underweight. He is faced with challenges of not being able to walk, He cannot feed on hard foods, he needs to go to a specialized hospital to get support for the back, but unfortunately they cannot meet the hospital bills. He is currently staying with Madam Margaret Namusoke one of Byidi’s partner VHTs who is taking care of both mother Nakku Alice and Kimera both helpless and cannot stand on their own.
This is Kusasira Angel 7 months old, born in 2018 to a disturbed and mentally ill mother who does not even know that she has a child. Kusasira is under the care of the VHT Namusoke. This child was not breast fed as the mother is not in position mentally to know how to breast feed a child. Therefore she is fed on milk. This child and her caretaker are facing enormous challenges such as, lack of proper beddings, clothing, financial difficulties in purchasing daily requirements such as milk on a daily basis and the little girl is deprived of motherly care as she is not cared for by her mother.
This is Kisakye Katongole an orphan without a father, his mother is jobless and homeless living a nomadic life, moving from one village to another and has so far lived in over six villages .The mother’s name is Nakitto also under the care of Margaret Namusoke the Byidi VHT.
It’s amazing that Katongole got his name from the health team that cared for him at birth, and he is malnourished.
This is Kanakulya Livingstone 14 years old. Lost his father at a tender age and now lives with his mother in Gangu Village. He studies at Kasagga Primary School in primary six. He is a sickler with sickle cells and currently he has developed complications experiencing constant pain in the joints. His mother is finding it hard to care for him and finds it hard to raise school fees for his education. He is faced with several challenges in life, one he is on daily medication thus facing a challenge of securing daily medication, challenge of proper feeding, as he requires to feed well. Due to the illness he is a slow learner at school and the mother does not have a job to adequately support herself and his other siblings.
This is Setimba Godfrey 12 years old an orphan. He is currently in Primary three and used to stay with the mother who is also homeless and moves from one place to another. The mother is mentally ill and the father passed on. In 2018 he was hit by a drunkard and now he has an eye problem. It’s difficult for his mother to raise school fees of Ushs. 35,000 per term. Setimba is traumatized after a period of abuse which he experienced in his former home and now he moved in with Madam Namusoke.
Nabakooza Rachael is 12 years old one of the many orphans in Gangu village, Nakaseke Sub County. Lost her father to illness and later dropped out of school due to lack of school fees. There is no body to take on the responsibility to support her at school, but has a passion for vocational apprenticeship. She informed our social worker that given the opportunity and support she would love to train in hair dressing and can also learn tailoring. So she needs support to realize her dream.
Sengendo Steven is 13 years old, living in Kasagga village, the mother a one Natongo Eva lives in Zirobwe –Luweero district. The father died and is a pupil at Kasagga Primary School. Due to the fact that he is not living with his parents but under the guardianship of Madam Namusoke, He has challenges of getting school fees for his education, constant illnesses and due to poor nutrition he is experiences joint pains. He has had a troubled childhood and needs care and psychosocial support.
Mukwaya Fred is six years old under the care of the grandmother who looks after so many children, he is a neglected child. His own father does not take care of him neither provide for his basics needs. He is a slow learner, lacks school fees and adequate parental care and guidance. Grand mother is a farmer who depends on agriculture and can barely feed and educate her children as well as support her family. Fred has a skin condition which has not received good medical attention, the other challenge is that the grand mother is also partially deaf due to old age thus not in position to take effective care of the children in her custody.
Namugenyi Oliver is 10 years old studying at Kasagga Primary school. She is an orphan with both parents dead. She is under the care of the grandmother who is a peasant farmer in the village, thus can barely raise school fees for a year to get Namugenyi through school.
Cosmas Amutolin is eight years old, mother has just died as a result of HIV/AIDS. He is currently under the care of a neighbor Ms. Nakiboneka Betty .Cosmas is in primary two at Kasagga Primary school. His father is in Ankole, but by the time of the mother’s death they had divorced and separated, thus there is a challenge on how to locate and reunite him with his father. This not done there is a possibility that he may drop out of school due to lack of school fees.
Nakiwa Esther is 11 years old in primary three studying at Kasagga Primary school. Both mother and father are mentally ill staying in Nsavu village. The parents never and were unable to take care of Esther until the grandmother took up the responsibility to pick her and take her to her home. This child is helpless and psychologically troubled, slow learner and needs a lot of support and reassurance to live a normal life.
Evelyn Nakunda is six years old , her mother has just died of HIV/AIDS and she is under the care of a friend .She is studying at Namusale Progressive but faced with challenges of school fees as there is fear that she will drop out of school. Evelyn has skin disease that needs medical attention, needs counselling and care so as to cope with the challenges of the mother passing on.
