HEPATITIS B PREVENTION AND VACCINATION CAMPAIGN

Create awareness

Byidi has embarked on a HEP B prevention program a learning point from the Asian and American populations that was affected by HEP B virus a leading cause of liver cancer that started way back in 2007 and has now become a threat in Uganda most especially in the northern parts of Uganda manifested so much in refugee camps compared to any other part of the country which is however gradually spreading slowly due to constant movements and migrations of the population.

This Campaign is geared towards creating awareness and education on the importance of screening, testing, and vaccination of HEP B among Ugandans and other residents in the country. We are utilizing unique health communication strategies to break the silence and normalize discussions of HEP B amongst communities. In addition, the campaign’s approach to using public engagements in schools and out of school communities creates an avenue of sharing information between the health professionals and the population. The findings and lessons learned have implications for not only HEP B but other stigmatized health issues in the community.

The key priorities of the Byidi campaign are

  1. To create public and health care provider awareness about the importance of testing and vaccinating communities for hepatitis B.
  2. To promote routine hepatitis B testing and vaccination within the primary six months period medical cycle
  3. To ensure access to treatment for chronically infected individuals.

We are to create a comprehensive media campaign to communicate targeted screening, vaccination, and treatment messages and broaden awareness messages that raise consciousness and support in general society and mainstream institutions. Under its health initiative project, BYIDI is partnering with Roko in order to scale up HIV and hepatitis B prevention service for its construction staff which is part of a bigger health intervention of HIV prevention in populations at risk. This partnership is over a period of 6 months where many health activities will be periodically conducted in order to preserve and improve the health of Roko staff through health talks, condom distribution, HIV and Hepatitis B testing, linkage into care and referral of those in need. These activities will ensure that these members of the working population are kept productive.

Through this strategic partnership, we hope to achieve and sustain a healthy workforce for the partner organization and a more productive human resource which in turn better serves our communities.
