HIV Sensitization and Screening at Cancer Institute center of Excellence

Despite the increased efforts to scale up treatment initiatives in Uganda there are still many people living with HIV and new infections are expected most especially among key populations like sex workers, men who have sex with men, adolescent girls, truck drivers, construction workers that are at high risk of  infections with that back ground .

In 2017 an estimated 1.3 million people were living with HIV and an estimated 26000 Ugandans died of Aids related illnesses. The epidemic is firmly established in the general population. As of 2017 the estimated HIV prevalence among adults aged 15 to 49 stood at 5.9% , whereas women are disproportionately affected with 8.8 % of adult women living with HIV compared to 4.3 % of men .  

With that background Byidi health team has embarked on a project of reaching out to construction workers on building sites one of which Roko construction co limited had come into partnership with Byidi to carry out Hiv screening and testing exercise on the new cancer institute centre of excellence construction site were 200 workers of which 95% were men have been sensitized and screened  

This programme will be an ongoing activity for the three years of the project duration to ensure awareness in form of preventive education, screening, counselling sessions , health care and  referral to the existing health units.

The programme is also to cover Hep B screening and vaccination of the construction workers as a means of ensuring safety at work.
